Homemade Elderflower Lemonade

reading time: 2 minutes

Once you've got your elderflower syrup (cordial) you can whip up delicious recipes within minutes! One of those quick recipes is this refreshing, floral tasting elderflower lemonade – a great drink for a summery garden party, a picnic, or a relaxed evening on the porch, watching a glowing sunset. Tastier and healthier than any store-bought fizzy drink!

Preparation time: 3 minutes
Main ingredients: elderflower cordial, lemon, mint
difficulty level: easy
makes: 1.5 litres
suitable for: vegan, lactose-free, gluten-free, nut-free, soy-free, low-fat

1 litre of water, still or sparkling
200-300 ml elderflower cordial (depending on how sweet you like it)
juice of 1 lemon
1 organic lemon, sliced
a handful of mint sprigs
1 – 2 cups ice cubes

Prepare a 1.5 litre pitcher or jug with 1 or 2 cups of ice cubes.
Add in the elderflower cordial, lemon juice, lemon slices and mint sprigs.
Feel free to adjust the amount of cordial to your liking.
Fill up with still or sparkling water.
Chill in the refrigerator until ready to serve. If you are going to serve your lemonade hours after preparation, make sure to take out the lemon slices and add them in only shortly before serving! Otherwise they will leave a bitter taste.

- Instead of elderflower cordial you can add about 4 elderflower heads and 4 tbsp sugar or raw honey to your jar. Make sure to only use the flowers and remove the green stalks. Also, your lemonade may have to infuse for half an hour or so to take on the flavours.
- Instead regular ice cubes, you can freeze some of your elderflower cordial in an ice cube tray and use those instead. You'll probably need some less elderflower syrup in that case.
- To substitute lemon, use lime.
- To substitute mint leaves, use lemon balm leaves.
- Instead of citrus fruit, you can add about 1 cup of fresh or frozen strawberries to the lemonade.
- You can also add frozen berries to your lemonade, without omitting any of the listed ingredients.
- Another option would be to make iced tea and add in your elderflower cordial.
- If needed, use reusable straws! They are great alternatives to plastic, such as glass, stainless steel or bamboo.
