5 DIY Hair Masks for Smooth and Strong Hair

Whether your hair is dried out from those hot summer months or it is about to get brittle and damaged during the upcoming winter - a hair mask will support and strengthen your hair roots, leaving you with smooth and healthy looking hair. 

I've always been a sucker for store-bought body care products: shampoos, conditioners, hand balms, lip balms, face masks... you name it! Anything to pamper and treat myself. So, why not make them at home?!

Homemade hair masks to nourish your scalp and hair are not only very cheap but also very easy to make - all you need are a few simple kitchen ingredients.

Here are 5 of my favourite DIY recipes for pampering your hair!

(1) Banana and Yogurt

This is like, my breakfast. (I couldn't resist having a spoonful before applying the mask, lol) A banana and yogurt hair mask is the simplest hair treatment you can make - with ingredients that are probably already in your pantry :) You'll get hungry making this, haha!

1-2 bananas (maybe 3, if your hair is really, really long and thick)
1/4 cup milk (oat milk or almond milk works best)
2-4 tbsp soy yogurt (you can use your own homemade soy yogurt)
(optional) 1 tsp honey

Prepare a paste by combining all listed ingredients in a blender. You want to do this until you have a slimy paste. No chunks. If you have chunks, they will probably adhere to your hair, move in with their kids, and refuse to leave when you shower. So no chunks. (Use a bottle of banana baby food purée if you want to save yourself from banana bits sticking to your hair.)

Spread the paste on the damaged, damp hair. Make sure your hair is tangle free and dry before apply the hair mask from root to tip. Leave it on for 20 minutes (cover your head with a shower cap or towel), rinse with warm water, and shampoo as usual. This leaves hair beautifully soft and tangle-free.

NOTE: Do NOT listen to strangers on the internet who tell you to put oats in your hair mask! Even if you blend them beforehand. It's a mess. Believe me. I did this once, and I spent half an hour trying to get that sh*t out of my hair again -.-


(2) Lemon and Olive Oil

This is the most time-consuming but least expensive hair conditioner of all five, as it works with only 2 ingredients that most of us already have at home. 

- 5 tbsp organic olive oil
- 1 organic lemon
Start by squeezing the lemon. In a small bowl or cup, mix lemon juice and olive oil. Apply the mixture to your dampened hair (leaving out the scalp! otherwise it will get greasy) and massage it thoroughly into your hair tips. You don't have to use the entire mixture - just as much to cover your hair. Cover your head with a plastic bag, a plastic shower cap and/or a towel. Leave on for 45 minutes. Shampoo it off. If your hair still feels oily, you will have to shampoo it once more (that happened to me because I'm using an organic, silicone-free shampoo). After letting it air-dry, your hair should not feel greasy, but only very soft, fluffy and super easy to comb through.

TIP: If you have blonde hair, rinse your hair with pure lemon juice and/or cooled down chamomile tea after washing it (rinse out with warm water afterwards) to lighten your naturally bright hair colour.


(3) Honey and Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar will condition your hair, balance pH levels, and smooth your hair cuticles. This is a great conditioner to get your hair from frizzy and dry to sleek and silky.

- 1 tsp organic honey
- 250ml warm water
- 1 tsp organic apple cider vinegar

In a small bowl or cup, dissolve the honey in warm water while constantly stirring. Add the apple cider vinegar and mix thoroughly. 

After washing your hair normally, rinse your hair with the honey vinegar water. Leave it on for 10 minutes (cover your head with a shower cap or towel) before rinsing it thoroughly with luke warm water. The smell will fade once your hair dries, and you will be left with your hair feeling soft and light. This is a great hair mask for those who are afraid to weigh down their hair with any oils.


(4) Coconut and Avocado

Coconut oil is one of the few oils that can make your hair not only smell awesome, but also that will make your hair shiny and so, so soft. Avocados have long been used in beauty treatments for their nourishing and hydrating properties. This hair mask is perfect for revitalizing dry, dull hair.

- 1 ripe avocado OR 1/2 cup full-fat coconut milk 
- 2 tbsp organic coconut oil, melted

If you're using the avocado, mash or blend it very finely. You want a very smooth avocado purée with absolutely no lumps. For a smoother hair mask, use full-fat coconut milk instead. Add the melted coconut oil, and mix very well. Apply the mixture to your hair, from the roots to the very ends. Leave on for at least 15 minutes (cover your head with a shower cap or towel). Rinse well with warm water. Use your fingers to remove all avocado residue while rinsing. You should be left with smooth and noticeably nourished hair. Plus you'll smell great because of the tropical coconut oil :)

TIP: I use coconut oil in many different ways - to do oil pulling, as a nourishing leave-in hair treatment at least twice a week (pour a tiny bit of coconut oil into your palm. rub your hands together to distribute evenly on your fingers, then run your fingers through your hair from roots to ends and leave in for one hour and wash out), as facial oil or as body lotion after a shower.


(5) Dry Yeast 

This is probably my favourite mask because it is super cheap, quick and easy! Don't let the thought of rubbing yeast into your hair put you off. Yeast contains several B-vitamins (B1, B2, B5 and B6), protein, minerals, folic acid and pantothenic acid. Yeast has a smoothing effect on skin and hair, so that dandruff can be reduced and the hair is easier to comb.

- 1 package (9g) dry yeast
- 100ml lukewarm water

After washing your hair, dissolve the yeast in the water. Massage the mixture into your scalp and knead the remaining hair conditioner into your damp hair tips. Wrap your hair in a towel and leave on for 15 minutes (your head will smell like freshly baked bread but don't worry). Rinse thoroughly with warm water. The slight after-smell of the yeast should vanish after a short while. Your hair will be noticeably silky and smooth.


BTW: With all of these hair masks, I'll usually get some house work done or watch a series or read a little while I let my mask sit :)

- Treat you hair to a deep-conditioning hair mask like these once a week or every other week.
- Minimize the use of hot tools such as blow-dryer, hair straightener or curling iron.
- In addition to any of these masks, you can rinse your hair with diluted apple cider vinegar (1 cup water : 1 tbsp ACV) without rinsing it out.
- If you're brave, a shot of cold water at the end of your shower will increase circulation and helps seal your hair cuticle for shinier hair!
